Can Polling Be Trusted?

As we grow closer to the 2024 election, polling will become more and more talked about. However, not all polls can be trusted. In an article published by The Guardian, which I will link below, a Washington Post-ABC News poll is called under question. The poll, which shows former President Trump leading incumbent Joe Biden by 10 points, has come under fire for being the second consecutive poll released by Washington-Post and ABC which has Trump leading. This is especially alarming considering nearly all other polling has Biden holding a considerable lead over Trump.       Now, at face value, the polls seem innocent enough. However, experts point out that the results could be fabricated in order to push an agenda. Regardless of the reason why the polls stand as two very egregious outliers, there is one very important takeaway here: do not trust every poll you see. Washington Post and ABC are both very reputable sources whom many would trust b...

WaPo vs. Musk: The War of Censorship

The balance between social media companies' status as publisher or platform has led to quite the controversy over misinformation policies. CEO of X, Elon Musk, as well as Susan Wojcicki of YouTube have begun rolling back misinformation policies ahead of the 2024 election. Wojcicki's motivations haven't been explicitly stated, whereas Musk cites X's status as a platform as reason enough to be very selective with censorship. Although their philosophies differ, the obvious motivator seems to be the controversy surrounding Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, who, at the request of American Intelligence Agencies, censored posts regarding both COVID-19 and the 2020 election.      According to an article by Naomi Nix and Sarah Ellison published in The Washington Post, the moves made by X and YouTube are best characterized as a surrender to disinformation. For them, the policies formerly in place contributed heavily to putting down "conspiracy theories," and were ...

Artificial Intelligence: Possible Threat to Democracy?

According to an opinion piece by Nikolas Lanum published by Fox News, UN advisor Neil Sahota is highly concerned about the threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI) to the 2024 presidential election. AI, which is actually a misnomer, is the term used to describe the recently developed, highly sophisticated and realistic algorithms which interact with real people in online spaces such as social media. One could easily mistake an AI generated account for the account of another real human being, when in reality, the account is generated specifically to engage with the user in a manner in which they would find inconspicuous. According to the article, Sahota fears that AI may be employed by special interest groups, corporations, or even by campaigns to engage in large-scale misinformation campaigns. In particular, the article references a recent deepfake (an AI generated video of a human) wherein former Senator Hilary Clinton endorsed Ron DeSantis, a republican candidate, for presid...
