Can Polling Be Trusted?

As we grow closer to the 2024 election, polling will become more and more talked about. However, not all polls can be trusted. In an article published by The Guardian, which I will link below, a Washington Post-ABC News poll is called under question. The poll, which shows former President Trump leading incumbent Joe Biden by 10 points, has come under fire for being the second consecutive poll released by Washington-Post and ABC which has Trump leading. This is especially alarming considering nearly all other polling has Biden holding a considerable lead over Trump.

Now, at face value, the polls seem innocent enough. However, experts point out that the results could be fabricated in order to push an agenda. Regardless of the reason why the polls stand as two very egregious outliers, there is one very important takeaway here: do not trust every poll you see. Washington Post and ABC are both very reputable sources whom many would trust based on name alone. However, this example makes clear that even large-scale polling operations can produce strange and unreliable results.

So, in this election season, do not let any polls deter you from going to the voting booth and casting your ballot for the candidate which you find to be the best fit!

  1. I definitely plan on voting in every election even if polls signify that it is worthless to vote for the losing candidate. Everyone should do the same, and vote no matter what the polls show. I think of the 2016 presidential election and the inaccuracies with the polls. Almost every poll showed Hillary Clinton winning, possibly in a landslide. However, Donald Trump ended up winning. So, even if that poll you mentioned about Biden and Trump is being called into question, it could end up being accurate. Who knows? Polls are never perfect. Plus, it is over a year until the 2024 presidential election. A lot can change between now and then.

  2. The example provided, where a Washington Post-ABC News poll is called into question, highlights the potential pitfalls of trusting every poll at face value. The fact that this poll shows former President Trump leading incumbent Joe Biden by 10 points, while most other polling indicates Biden holding a considerable lead, raises concerns about the reliability and integrity of the results. This inconsistency is particularly alarming when it comes from reputable sources like the Washington Post and ABC.
It is essential to consider the methodology employed in conducting the poll, the sample size, the demographics of the respondents, and any potential conflicts of interest. Without this critical evaluation, relying solely on polls can lead to a skewed perception of public opinion.
